Does My Dog Need a Comfort Toy?
When we love our pets, we naturally want to spoil them. While walking past the dog toy section, it’s easy to fall for a cute, soft plush. But is it really beneficial for the dog – or just for us humans?
The benefits of a comfort toy for dogs
Like a child’s comfort object, a dog’s plush toy absorbs familiar household scents. When your dog cuddles or chews it, it helps relieve stress and provides a sense of reassurance. The soft texture and familiar smell have a calming effect.
Gentle and flexible, plush toys are ideal for puppies: they can safely chew and stay occupied while learning. They also encourage play (fetch, hide and seek, gentle tugging) and strengthen the bond between dog and owner. During stressful times (a move, your absence…), the comfort toy helps ease anxiety and provides emotional security.
Which dogs benefit most?
Comfort toys suit all dogs in need of reassurance, but especially puppies and anxious animals. After adoption or a move, a familiar-smelling toy can be a great source of comfort. Adult dogs that are fearful, tense or lonely can also find emotional support in a plush companion. Some dogs even form attachments to their toy to cope with separation.
How to choose the right plush toy
The plush should match your dog’s size: too small, it could be swallowed; too large, it may lose appeal. Choose sturdy models with reinforced stitching, made from non-toxic materials (cotton, velvet, soft flannel) and machine washable. The best comfort toy combines softness, safety, and durability.
Free access or under supervision?
You can let your dog keep its toy to feel secure, but supervision is important. Animal welfare groups recommend monitoring play sessions, as plush toys can tear and release small parts that might be dangerous. Check the toy regularly and replace it if damaged. Outside active play, a safe comfort toy can stay in the bed or crate as a calming companion.
In summary
A well-chosen plush toy can make your dog’s environment more comforting and secure. Choose one specifically designed for pets, safe and durable. Several models are available in specialised shops – including Merlin&Cie’s lovely collection. A comfort toy won’t replace your presence, but it can certainly enhance your dog’s well-being.
