Rabbits: Care, Nutrition and Well-Being

Rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, pet rat, ferret, gerbil, bird or reptile: NAC often appeal because of their small size, their gentleness or their originality. But adopting a NAC should never be just a sudden crush. Behind the image of a small animal that seems easy to live with, there can be very specific needs, a budget to plan for, time to devote and a real commitment over several years. Before welcoming one of these companions into your home, there are therefore some questions worth asking...

When we talk about the sensitive issue of animal abandonment, the images that most often come to mind are usually those of dogs and cats. Yet every year, many other animals are also abandoned, given up, neglected or entrusted to associations. Rabbits, guinea pigs, pet rats, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, birds and even reptiles are among these companions grouped together in France under the term NAC, short for “Nouveaux Animaux de Compagnie”, meaning new companion animals. Less visible in the...

For a long time, rabbits suffered from a misleading image: that of a quiet, discreet and supposedly “simple” pet. Yet anyone who truly lives with a rabbit quickly discovers a very different reality. A rabbit is constantly communicating. Through movements, body posture, habits, reactions and sometimes almost imperceptible sounds, rabbits express emotions, comfort, anxiety, excitement and a desire for interaction. The challenge is learning how to understand this incredibly subtle language. Many...

Organising a birthday for a rabbit does not mean creating a party, but imagining a calm, enriching moment perfectly adapted to its sensitivity. A discreet animal, deeply attached to its environment, the rabbit does not seek excitement or surprises. Celebrating its birthday therefore becomes something else entirely: a way to slow down, to observe, and to offer a subtly different experience —...

In her home, the living room is organised around play areas, vegetables are chosen carefully… and her phone is full of photos of her long-eared companion. For a birthday, a housewarming or simply as a thoughtful surprise, giving a gift that also includes her rabbit is a particularly touching gesture. It shows that you understand how meaningful the bond between a person and their animal can be. If...

Having a garden often makes people want to share nature’s freshness with their rabbit: freshly picked leaves, crunchy branches, plants straight from the garden. It feels instinctive and well intentioned. However, when it comes to rabbit nutrition, “natural” does not automatically mean “safe”. Rabbits have a very specific digestive system, perfectly adapted to a fibre-rich diet, but also extremely sensitive to imbalance. Plants that are harmless to humans – or even to other animals – can cause...

The domestic rabbit is still too often seen as a “cage animal”. Yet current knowledge in animal behaviour and exotic (NAC) veterinary medicine paints a very different picture: rabbits are intelligent, active and sensitive animals with high environmental needs. Providing a suitable living environment is essential for their physical health, emotional balance and longevity. Cage or enclosure? Full freedom or supervised roaming? What does a rabbit truly need, and what dangers should be...

Dogs, cats and rabbits love to explore, think and solve small challenges. To keep them balanced, affection and exercise are not enough — their mind also needs daily stimulation. Brain games help channel their energy while boosting their cognitive abilities.
